Brushing and flossing at home are the foundation of a healthy mouth, but they are only half the story. Routine dental cleanings and checkups are how problems get caught early, when they are simpler, more comfortable, and less costly to treat.
What happens at a routine visit
A typical checkup has two parts: a professional cleaning and a dental exam.
The cleaning. A hygienist removes plaque and hardened tartar (also called calculus) that brushing cannot reach, especially along the gumline and between teeth. Teeth are then polished to remove surface stains and leave them feeling smooth.
The exam. Your dentist looks closely at your teeth, gums, tongue, and the soft tissues of your mouth. We check for cavities, signs of gum disease, worn or cracked teeth, and changes that deserve a closer look. X-rays are taken when needed to see what cannot be seen by eye.
Why regular visits are worth it
Early detection. Small cavities and early gum problems often cause no pain. A routine exam finds them before they grow.
Healthier gums. Gum disease is common and often silent. Regular cleanings help keep gums healthy and help prevent it from progressing.
Fresher breath and a brighter smile. Removing buildup makes a visible difference.
Fewer surprises. Steady, preventive care usually means fewer urgent visits down the road.
A baseline for your health. When your dentist knows what is normal for you, changes are easier to spot.
How often should you go?
Many patients are advised to visit about every six months, but the right schedule depends on you. Some people benefit from more frequent visits, for example if they have a history of gum disease or frequent cavities. Your dentist will recommend a schedule based on your own needs.
Tips to get more from every visit

Limit sugary snacks and drinks, and sip water through the day.

Let us know about changes to your health or medications.
Keep your appointments, even when your teeth feel fine.
